SACRAMENT OF THE SICK

In the Sacrament of the Sick the Church commends to the suffering and glorified Lord, the faithful who are dangerously ill, so that He may support and save them, by the anointing with oil and the pronunciation of the words prescribed in the liturgical books. It takes its rationale from the mission entrusted to the Apostles by Our Blessed Lord who went out to preach the message of repentance, to cast out demons, and to anoint the sick with oil (Mark 6:12), and also from the Apostle, James, “Is there any among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the Church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord; and the prayer of faith will save the sick man, and the Lord will raise him up; and if he has committed any sins they will be forgiven. (James 5:14-15).

The Sacrament of the Sick is conferred by the Priest on those parishioners who are seriously ill or have a life-threatening illness. This is usually done during pastoral visitations to the sick or to those who are residents in the nursing home located in the Parish.
