RECONCILIATION

The Christian, through the Sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation and Holy Communion, receives the new life of Christ. However, as St Paul teaches, we carry this life in earthen vessels and it remains hidden with Christ in God. (2 Cor 4:7) and Col 3:3). We are still in our earthly tent subject to suffering illness and death. (2 Cor 5:1). The new life we receive from God can be weakened (by venial sin), or even lost (by mortal sin).

The Sacrament of Penance and Reconciliation enables us to obtain pardon from God’s mercy for the offence committed against Him, and we are, at the same time, reconciled with the Church which we have wounded by our sins and which by charity, by example, and by prayer, labours for our conversion.

The ordinary means of obtaining forgiveness of sins committed after Baptism is through individual confession and absolution. The penitent must have true sorrow for their sins, a firm purpose of amendment and a willingness to undertake personal satisfaction and reparation for their sins.
